Information about Permits

STUDY PERMIT

In most cases, you must apply for a study permit before you come to Canada. You will need to have your letter of acceptance from Alpha International Academy before applying for your study permit. All the process can be made online through the Government of Canada Official Website (http://www.cic.gc.ca).

You will also need:

  • A valid passport;
  • Proof you can support yourself in Canada, and any family coming with you;
  • All the requested application forms completed;
  • A medical examination, if requested;

There are a few eligibility requirements that you have to meet in order to apply for your study permit. You can study in Canada if you:

  • are enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI);
  • prove you have enough money to pay for your tuition fees, living expenses for yourself and your family, and return transportation for yourself and any family who come with you;
  • obey the law, have no criminal record and get a police certificate (if required).
  • are in good health and get a medical exam (if required)
  • prove to an officer that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires.

While studying in Canada you must make progress towards completing your program, respect any conditions listed on your study permit, stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements and leave Canada when your permit expires.

Study Permit Extension

If you need to extend your Study Permit to complete your studies you must apply for an extension either by paper or online (www.cic.gc.ca). Please note that you can not let your study permit expire. The required documents for the extension are (please check the CIC website for an updated list):
• Your valid Passport
• 3.5 x 4.5 picture with a white background
• Your current Study Permit
• Letter from the school indicating confirmation of acceptance and/or registration as a student, the program of study, start and completion date of the academic program, and any conditions of acceptance or registration
• Transcript from all previous semesters
• Tuition fee receipts
• Proof of financial support (e.g. a letter from a Canadian bank indicating your name, account balance and account number)

POST GRADUATION WORK PERMIT

You have 180 days after your school issues your final marks to apply. To be eligible for the PGWP, you must have completed a study program at a designated learning institution. The program must be at least 8 months long and led to a degree, diploma or certificate. Moreover, you must have maintained a full-time status as a student in Canada during each semester of your study program.

Before you can apply for a PGWP, you’ll need the following documents:

  • An official letter from your College confirming the completion of your study program.
  • An official transcript, or a copy of your transcript from your school’s website.
  • Other documents may be requested once the application is received.

Step 1: Make sure you have what you need

To apply online, you will need:

  • A scanner or camera to create electronic copies of your documents, and
  • A valid credit or debit card.

Step 2: Read the instruction guide

Even if you apply online, you should read CIC’s instruction guide before you complete you complete your application.

Step 3: Prepare your answers for the online tool

Before you can upload your forms, you must answer some questions. We use your answers to create a personalized document checklist for you.

Step 4: Know the fees you have to pay

In most cases your fees will include:

  • Processing fees for you and anyone you include on your application.
  • Biometrics.

Fees will be paid at the end of your application.

Make sure you pay both:

  • The open work permit holder fee, and
  • The work permit fee.

Note: Depending on your situation, you may need to pay for

  • Medical exams
  • Police certificates
  • Services at a Visa Application Centre, if you use one.

Step 5: Create your online account or sign in

You can use your account to:

  • Pay your fees
  • Submit your application
  • Check your status
